For many DIY mechanics and independent shops, the GM MDI 2 Clone is an essential tool for vehicle diagnostics. However, getting the hardware to communicate with Windows 10—specifically with Tech2Win and GDS2—can be a technical nightmare.
If your GM MDI Manager is not recognizing your device or you are seeing "PC SW Update" errors, you likely have a driver version conflict. Here is the proven method to get your MDI 2 online.
GM MDI Manager Setup v8.5.33.154 Free Download
To ensure compatibility with clone hardware, avoid the latest Bosch updates and stick to these specific versions:
GM Launcher Setup: v3.0.1530.16
GM MDI Software (Drivers): v8.5.33.53
The most common mistake is using the newest Bosch MDI Manager. Clones often require "legacy" driver support to be recognized.
Uninstall any existing MDI Manager software.
Install GM Launcher Setup v3.0.1530.16.
Install GM_MDI-MDI2_Software_Setup_v8.5.33.53.exe.
Reboot your PC. This is a critical step for the Windows registry to recognize the new hardware drivers.
If the MDI Manager finds your device but shows a "PC SW Update" error or a red 'X', you must force the firmware to sync with your installed driver version.
Disconnect all power sources from the GM MDI 2 (unplug the OBDII cable and USB).
Press and hold the Power button on the MDI 2 unit.
While holding the button, reconnect the power (via OBDII or USB).
Continue holding the power button for 10 seconds.
The MDI Manager on your PC should pop up a message asking if you want to Recover the MDI.
Select "Yes" or "Recover" in the MDI Manager software.
Wait. Do not unplug the device during this process.
Once the progress bar completes, the MDI 2 will reboot and show as "Connected."
A common point of confusion is trying to run the MDI Manager and diagnostic software at the same time.
Crucial: Once the MDI Manager confirms the device is online, close the MDI Manager completely.
Open your Tech2Win or GDS2 software.
Select the MDI 2 from the device selection list. It should now be fully recognized and ready for vehicle communication.
| Problem | Solution |
| MDI Not Found | Ensure you are using a USB 2.0 port if USB 3.0 fails. |
| Firmware Mismatch | Repeat the Factory Reset (Section 2) after every driver change. |
| "No Communication" | Ensure the MDI Manager is closed before launching Tech2Win. |
